  52. I don't know about bringing it into the country, but many (most?)
  53. European repeaters require a sub-tone to operate, which is why you'll
  54. see both US and European versions of the HTs in the catalogs.  You may
  55. have to get an add-on tone board from Icom for your HT to work there.

  57. Also, in Europe the 2m band is smaller than it is here in the US,
  58. topping out at 146MHz instead of 148MHz.  And the 70cm band in Europe is
  59. only 430-440MHz, so there may not be much activity other than
  60. satellites there.

  125. Contest logs are starting to flow through the system  already. 
  126. There are some very promising logs in already,  in the way of 
  127. scores.  We  will  keep you updated with news as it  comes  to 
  128. hand.

  131. We  have  some  news  regarding the  WAADCA  RTTY  mailbox  at 
  132. Wireless  Hill.  It is apparently growing faster than expected 
  133. in  one  of  its  function -- White  Page  server  -- and  has 
  134. outstripped its memory in that regard.  Whatever,  we are sure 
  135. that it will be back,  doing what it is expected to  do,  very 
  136. soon.

  138. All one can say is that if that is the cause, the mailbox is a 
  139. resounding  success and congratulations to all those  amateurs 
  140. making  use of this facility.  By the time you read this,  the 
  141. mailbox  may be back up but,  in any case,  it is good to  see 
  142. that the mailbox is proving so popular.

  162. The geomagnetic field at Learmonth (WA) was quiet to unsettled 
  163. 17th-22nd June,  with brief active periods from 0900-1500UT on 
  164. 19th; and quiet on 23rd.

  166. Ionospheric  F2 critical frequencies at Sydney were near  pre-
  167. dicted  monthly  values 17th,  and 20th-23rd  June,  and  near 
  168. normal to 20 per cent enhanced on 18th-19th.

  329. CAMBODIA.   Sanyi,  HA7VK,  will  be  active  as  XU7VK  until

  332. ANGOLA.   The  Red Cross will be sending Peter,  ON6TT,  to D2 
  333. land  June 16 to July 16.   He plans to be active on  the  low 
  334. bands and the WARC bands.   Commercial equipment will be used, 
  335. so  split  operation  will not be possible.   QSL  via  ON5NT.  
  336. After  his stay in Angola,  Peter will be active  from  Malawi 
  337. until August 1.

  339. KERGUELEN ISLAND.   Pierre,  FT5XJ, was recently heard on a DX 
  340. net  on 14226 kHz at 0530z.   He plans to leave the island  in 
  341. July  but  will  return three months later.   QSL  via  F5NLL, 
  342. listed as F1NLL in the Callbook.

  344. BENIN.   DJ4IJ, is active as TY1IJ, mainly on SSB and the WARC 
  345. bands.  Check 14275 kHz around 2200z.   QSL via DJ5IO.   TY1PS

  349. CENTRAL AFRICA.   Gene,  TL8NG,  has been busy with CW on  the 
  350. WARC bands.  Check 12, 17 and 30 meters between 1330 and 1600z 
  351. and  again after 0430z.   He also shows up on the 21335 DX net 
  352. around 1400z. QSL via WA1ECA.

  354. THE GAMBIA.   Uli,  C56/DK2OC, and Brendan, C56/G0UCT, will be 
  355. closing  down  operations shortly after this  bulletin  starts 
  356. making the rounds.  QSL C56/DK2OC via DK2OC, and C56/G0UCT via 
  357. G1GMZ.

  359. CAPE VERDE.   Angelo,  D44BC,  has been heard on 17 meters and 
  360. RS12.  Check 18128 kHz around 1130z.   Listen on the satellite 
  361. downlink between 29430 and 29445 kHz from 1200 to 1430z.

  363. TONGA.   Paul, A35RK, will be going QRT June 18.  Tune between 
  364. 14175 and 14226 kHz from 0330 and 0500z.   Also, check the low 
  365. end  of 40 meters for his CW at 1330z.   For  RTTY  QSOs,  try 
  366. around 14086 kHz during the same times.  QSL via KK6H.

  368. VANUATU.  YJ0AVH frequents 14196 kHz between 0230 and 0600z.
  369.  
  370. ARUBA.  Art, K9XJ, will be signing P4/K9XJ or P40XJ June 16 to 
  371. 23. This will be a casual operation with most activity on the
  372. Novice/Tech Plus frequencies.  QSL to his Callbook address.
  373.  
  374. LIECHTENSTEIN.  Eight members of the Eindhoven Students Radio
  375. Amateur  Club,  will be active from 1800z July 6 to 1200z July 
  376. 11. This all band, multimode operation will also include 6 and 
  377. 2  meters,  and 70 centimeters.   Their main emphasis will  be 
  378. taking part in the IARU HF Championship on CW and SSB and  the 
  379. CQ  WW WPX VHF/UHF Contest.   The group has requested the call 
  380. sign HB0TUE for the entire operation.   If they cannot get the 
  381. requested  call  sign,  operators  will sign  HB0/  and  their 
  382. personal call signs.  QSL via PI4TUE.

  384. MALYJ  VYSOTSKIJ  ISLAND.   R1MVI will be  active  during  the 
  385. Russian DX Contest, July 30 and 31.
  386.  
  387. TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.  Will, AA4NC, plans to sign VP5NC in 
  388. the  IARU  HF  Championship  on SSB and  CW.   There  will  be 
  389. activity before and after the contest on the WARC bands.   QSL 
  390. via CBA.

  392. SIX METER DX.   John,  KB5QKS,  reports that 6 meters has been 
  393. great  so far this season.   His recent DX  contacts  include:  
  394. C6APF,  HH2PKB, HH7PV, KP4SQ, TI2NA, TI4JHQ, WP4KJJ, XE3EB and 
  395. XE3WP.   PacketCluster  spots  show this to be an  outstanding 
  396. sporadic E skip season.

  398. THIS  WEEKEND ON THE RADIO.   The All Asian  DX  Contest,  CW, 
  399. sponsored  by JARL,  is from 0000z June 18 to 2400z June 19 on 
  400. 160 through 10 meters.  Exchange signal report and a two digit 
  401. number  denoting operator age.   YLs and XYLs may send  signal 
  402. report and 00.

  404. The SMIRK QSO Party,  sponsored by the Six Meter International 
  405. Radio Klub, runs from 0000z June 18 until 2400z June 19 on six 
  406. meters only.   Contacts between stations in the 48  contiguous 
  407. states  must  be made above 50.125 MHz.   Exchange call  sign, 
  408. SMIRK number and grid square.

  494.      I am setting up FBB with BPQ.  All is well except when FBB does a
  495. outgoing connect.  It always says its on channel 1 of BPQ even though it
  496. is actually on port 3 or 4.  Incoming connects are always correctly labeled
  497. as to what port they are.  Did I miss something in BPQ or FBB?  It works as
  498. is, but I would like to make the labels identify the correct port on out-
  499. going connects.

  645. this only works if you run the chip cool and keep it at the same
  646. temperature as the battery.  This chip can be obtained from both
  647. A and A Engineering (see ARRL Handbook chapter 35 for a suppliers
  648. list) or Allied Electronics (according to their latest catalog).

  651. A smart charger works by sensing the voltage and current--if the
  652. battery is taking lots of current at 13.8 volts, it needs to be charged
  653. fully.  On the other hand, if there is just a trickle of current, you 
  654. want the float voltage to maintain charge.

  726. Local customs and procedures vary. Here in Detroit area it is not uncommon
  727. to hear a "CQ" call (not the old 40 phone  "seeee cueeeee seeeee cueeee"
  728. for ten minutes, just a "CQ from W8xx"  This is used interchangeably 
  729. with the "xxx monitoring" call, which just announces one's presence
  730. on the freq. just in case any of your pals are around and want to talk.
  731. While travelling thru upstate NY, I did monitor a QSO for about 
  732. twenty minutes while an old timer and newcomer argued vehemently about 
  733. whether it was ok or even LEGAL to call CQ on a repeater. Lots of 
  734. time on their hands I guess!

  784. fact it *does* tune in 1 kHz steps. Smaller tuning steps make sense.
