I don't know about bringing it into the country, but many (most?)
European repeaters require a sub-tone to operate, which is why you'll
see both US and European versions of the HTs in the catalogs. You may
have to get an add-on tone board from Icom for your HT to work there.
Also, in Europe the 2m band is smaller than it is here in the US,
topping out at 146MHz instead of 148MHz. And the 70cm band in Europe is
only 430-440MHz, so there may not be much activity other than
satellites there.

Contest logs are starting to flow through the system already.
There are some very promising logs in already, in the way of
scores. We will keep you updated with news as it comes to
hand.

We have some news regarding the WAADCA RTTY mailbox at
Wireless Hill. It is apparently growing faster than expected
in one of its function -- White Page server -- and has
outstripped its memory in that regard. Whatever, we are sure
that it will be back, doing what it is expected to do, very
soon.
All one can say is that if that is the cause, the mailbox is a
resounding success and congratulations to all those amateurs
making use of this facility. By the time you read this, the
mailbox may be back up but, in any case, it is good to see
that the mailbox is proving so popular.

Subject: Help with FBB & BPQ
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hello,
I am setting up FBB with BPQ. All is well except when FBB does a
outgoing connect. It always says its on channel 1 of BPQ even though it
is actually on port 3 or 4. Incoming connects are always correctly labeled
as to what port they are. Did I miss something in BPQ or FBB? It works as
is, but I would like to make the labels identify the correct port on out-
going connects.
Thanks for your time and input. Please E-mail to the following address:

: Lead acid batteries are normally charged with a constant voltage

: 14.5 volts during charge, and 13.8 volts during sustain. Auto chargers

: so it'll allow near full voltage at low current, and drop the

This is okay as long as you remove the charger after the battery
is charged. Otherwise, you will overcharge the batteries,
possibly running them dry. A better charger will drop the voltage
back after the battery is charged. The Unitrode 3906 does this.
It also compensates for the battery temperature, though I assume
this only works if you run the chip cool and keep it at the same
temperature as the battery. This chip can be obtained from both
A and A Engineering (see ARRL Handbook chapter 35 for a suppliers
list) or Allied Electronics (according to their latest catalog).
A & A also sells boards/kits/finished units.
A smart charger works by sensing the voltage and current--if the
battery is taking lots of current at 13.8 volts, it needs to be charged
fully. On the other hand, if there is just a trickle of current, you
want the float voltage to maintain charge.

Anyone build the QST loop antenna from the May 94 issue? I understand
it can be resized for 40M. Anyone do that yet?

I don't think I've ever heard anyone call CQ on a repeater. Lots of
"xxxx monitoring" though. I always thought you'd like go to hell or something
if you even thought about saying CQ on a repeater ;-)

Local customs and procedures vary. Here in Detroit area it is not uncommon
to hear a "CQ" call (not the old 40 phone "seeee cueeeee seeeee cueeee"
for ten minutes, just a "CQ from W8xx" This is used interchangeably
with the "xxx monitoring" call, which just announces one's presence
on the freq. just in case any of your pals are around and want to talk.
While travelling thru upstate NY, I did monitor a QSO for about
twenty minutes while an old timer and newcomer argued vehemently about
whether it was ok or even LEGAL to call CQ on a repeater. Lots of
time on their hands I guess!

Senator Barry Goldwater, K7UGA, appeared on the Ham Radio & More
show this past Sunday, and was sensational, as usual. Senator Goldwater
answered callers questions ranging from MARS to STI Defense
Systems. Much praise was given to Senator Goldwater for his time given
to the country.
Some quotes of interest included his support of the no-code license, and
he said that since code is outdated and not used in the military anymore,
he believes the time has come to do away with the code requirements,
even though he throughly enjoys code and can be found on CW many
times each week. He also believes that "our" ability to handle national
emergencies is justification in itself for our existence, and he is VERY
opposed to charging for a license.
Ham Radio & More can be heard each Sunday at 6:00pm EST on the
Talk America Network in 23 cities and via satellite on spacenet 3,
transponder 9, 6.8 audio. More info at 1-602-241-1510.

Well I don't expect much from this radio that's for sure. As a matter of
fact it *does* tune in 1 kHz steps. Smaller tuning steps make sense.
I just found some info in the 1993 ARRL handbook (page 12-28 radio receiving
principles) that says most commercial receivers use 250-600 Hz bandwith
filters for CW and 1.8 to 2.7 kHz filters for SSB.
What is the frequency resolution in most HF transceivers ?
